Punjab continues to receive rain and thunderstorms: PMD

Islamabad, May 3, 2025 — The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast continued rain and thunderstorms across Punjab and other parts of the country, warning of potential damage due to strong windstorms, lightning, and isolated hailstorms.

A strong westerly wave currently affecting the upper and central regions of Pakistan is responsible for the ongoing weather activity.

The PMD reports that partly cloudy skies accompanied by rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist through Sunday in various districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, and D.G. Khan. These areas may also experience localized heavy downpours and hailstorms, prompting the department to issue an alert for the public and local authorities.

Residents of Punjab are urged to remain cautious, as the forecast includes wind-thunderstorms that could impact infrastructure. The PMD specifically warns that loose structures—such as electric poles, solar panels, tree branches, and parked vehicles—may be at risk of damage. People living in vulnerable locations are advised to secure outdoor belongings and avoid unnecessary travel during stormy periods.

Besides Punjab, the forecast also extends to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Upper Sindh, and Northeast Balochistan, where rain and thunderstorms are expected at isolated locations. In southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Punjab, strong gusty winds are also likely, along with brief spells of heavy rainfall.

Over the past 24 hours, hot and dry conditions prevailed across most of the country, but rain and thunderstorms were observed at scattered locations in Balochistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and parts of Punjab. Recorded rainfall included 12 mm in Barkhan (Balochistan) and 8 mm at Multan Airport, confirming the PMD’s predictions.

In southern Pakistan, temperatures soared, with Turbat recording a maximum of 45°C, followed closely by Jacobabad, Sibbi, Mohenjodaro, and Dadu at 44°C.

The PMD emphasizes that the weather system is being closely tracked and encourages citizens, particularly in Punjab, to follow updates via official platforms. Emergency teams and civic authorities remain on standby to respond swiftly to any adverse conditions caused by the ongoing rain and thunderstorms.
