Punjab Set for Rain and Strong Winds as Weather System Arrives

Islamabad, February 19, 2025 – The province of Punjab is set to experience widespread rainfall over the next 24 hours as a western weather system moves into the country.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that the system has entered northern Pakistan, bringing rain, strong winds, and snowfall to various regions, including key cities in Punjab.

According to the PMD, this system will result in moderate to heavy rain showers across Punjab, particularly in major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sargodha. Lighter rainfall is also expected in Multan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalnagar, bringing a welcome respite from dry conditions. Meanwhile, Murree and Galiyat are expected to witness significant snowfall, which could disrupt travel and cause road blockages.

Authorities have issued travel advisories, particularly for the hilly areas of Punjab, warning that snowfall could lead to hazardous driving conditions. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has urged tourists and residents to take necessary precautions. “Citizens should stay updated on weather conditions, and those traveling to northern Punjab must prepare for potential road closures,” said PDMA Director General Irfan Kathia. He added that emergency services across Punjab are on high alert to address any disruptions caused by the weather.

Beyond Punjab, the western system is also affecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), with intermittent rain and gusty winds in Peshawar, Chitral, Swat, Malam Jabba, and Parachinar. The lowest temperature recorded in Kalam dropped to -3°C, while Peshawar saw a minimum of 7°C.

Karachi Prepares for Champions Trophy Opener Amid Warm Weather

While Punjab is dealing with rain and cold weather, Karachi is expected to remain warm and mostly cloudy. Temperatures in the city are forecasted to peak at 32°C during the day, with a low of 19°C at night.

The warm conditions coincide with the start of the ICC Champions Trophy, with Pakistan facing New Zealand at the National Bank Stadium. Cricket fans are excited as this marks Pakistan’s biggest international tournament in nearly three decades. The PMD has advised spectators to stay hydrated and take precautions against the heat, especially in the afternoon when temperatures will be at their highest.

Looking ahead, Karachi’s weather is expected to improve by Thursday, with sunny skies and temperatures ranging between 23°C and 31°C, ensuring ideal conditions for the second day of the tournament.
