Ratatouille 2 Unlikely as Director Brad Bird Rules Out Sequel

Fans hoping for a sequel to Pixar’s beloved animated film Ratatouille may be disappointed after director Brad Bird revealed that he has no plans to revisit the story.

Bird, who wrote and directed the 2007 Academy Award-winning film, recently addressed speculation about a possible Ratatouille 2 during an interview with Collider. The filmmaker made it clear that he believes the story has already reached its natural conclusion.

“No, I don’t,” Bird said when asked whether he had plans for a sequel.

According to the director, Pixar executives have occasionally hinted at the possibility of a follow-up, but he has consistently rejected the idea.

“They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react,” Bird explained. “They’ll crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like: ‘Would you?’ And I’m like: ‘No, we told that story.'”

The filmmaker, who also directed The Incredibles and The Iron Giant, said successful films often face pressure for sequels, even when creators feel their stories are complete.

Bird noted that fans have also suggested a sequel to The Iron Giant, despite the film’s initial box-office struggles. However, he argued that continuing stories simply because audiences enjoyed them is not always necessary.

Meanwhile, actor Patton Oswalt, who voiced Remy the rat in Ratatouille, recently expressed enthusiasm about returning if the right idea emerged.

Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, Oswalt said he would gladly reprise the role if Bird developed a compelling story worth telling.

“Obviously, I’d love if there was a Ratatouille sequel,” Oswalt said. However, he stressed that any continuation should happen naturally rather than being created solely for commercial reasons.

The actor pointed to sequels such as Terminator 2 and Aliens as examples of follow-ups that successfully expanded their original stories while offering something new.

Released in 2007, Ratatouille follows Remy, a talented rat with dreams of becoming a chef in Paris. The film became a critical and commercial success, earning widespread acclaim for its storytelling, animation and emotional depth.

For now, Bird’s comments suggest that fans should not expect Ratatouille 2 to arrive anytime soon.
