Samsung reportedly developing a massive 17-inch foldable tablet

A tipster claims Samsung has started work on a device that could expand from an 8-inch tablet into a 17-inch display, although its launch timeline remains unknown.

Samsung is reportedly working on a large foldable tablet featuring a display that expands from 8 inches when folded to 17 inches when fully unfolded.

The latest information comes from a tipster on X who previously claimed in late August that a 17-inch foldable tablet was under development. At the time, the source suggested that multiple versions and test devices were being worked on but did not identify the manufacturer.

The same tipster has now provided a brief update, stating that “Samsung has already started”, suggesting that the South Korean technology giant is behind the project.

According to the earlier claim, the device would offer an 8-inch screen in its folded state and expand to a considerably larger 17-inch display when opened. However, no further specifications, design details or technical information have been shared so far.

It also remains unclear how Samsung plans to implement the folding mechanism. One possibility is a single 17-inch panel that folds outwards, with only half of the display remaining active when the device is closed. This design could leave part of the main screen exposed to potential damage.

Another possibility is a large internal folding display accompanied by an 8-inch external cover screen, similar to the design approach used in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold smartphones. However, such a configuration could increase manufacturing complexity and the device’s overall price.

This is not the first time Samsung has been linked to a foldable tablet. A device reportedly called the Galaxy Z Tab was tipped in 2023, but the rumoured product never materialised.

Samsung Display has demonstrated large foldable panels through several prototypes at technology exhibitions. However, whether Samsung’s mobile division intends to turn such technology into a commercial product remains uncertain.

The foldable device market has also evolved, with Apple entering the segment through its iPhone Duo. Samsung may therefore be exploring larger foldable designs to demonstrate the potential of the technology.

There is currently no confirmed launch date or indication of when the reported 17-inch tablet could reach consumers. The project should therefore be treated as an early rumour rather than a confirmed upcoming product.
