SBP Announces Bank Holiday on December 25, 2023

Karachi, December 20, 2023 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) declared a bank holiday on Monday, December 25, 2023, in observance of Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas, as announced by the Government of Pakistan.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the central bank confirmed that all offices of the State Bank of Pakistan would remain closed on December 25, 2023 (Monday) due to the public holiday marking the celebration of Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas.

Quaid-e-Azam Day is celebrated in honor of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, on his birth anniversary. This day holds significant importance in the history of Pakistan as it pays tribute to the visionary leader who played a pivotal role in the creation of the country.

Additionally, Christmas, a widely celebrated religious holiday, is also recognized as a public holiday in Pakistan, acknowledging the Christian community’s observance of the Holy birth.

The decision to declare a bank holiday was communicated to the presidents and chief executives of all banks, development financial institutions (DFIs), and microfinance banks (MFBs) by the State Bank of Pakistan. This measure ensures that financial institutions across the country align with the government’s directive and grant their employees the opportunity to observe the public holiday.

Bank customers are advised to plan their financial transactions accordingly, taking into consideration the closure of banking services on December 25, 2023. ATM services and online banking are expected to remain operational during the holiday, providing customers with continued access to essential banking functions.

The SBP encourages citizens to commemorate Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas in a spirit of unity, tolerance, and harmony, fostering a sense of togetherness among the diverse communities that make up the fabric of Pakistan. The central bank extends its best wishes for a joyous celebration to all citizens and emphasizes the significance of mutual respect and understanding during this festive season.
