Karachi, February 4, 2025 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced a bank holiday on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in observance of Kashmir Day.
The decision aligns with the Government of Pakistan’s declaration of a public holiday, ensuring that financial institutions remain closed for the day.
In a formal communication addressed to the presidents and CEOs of commercial banks, the SBP reiterated that all banking operations will be suspended on February 5. The SBP emphasized that this holiday serves as an occasion to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir, who continue to struggle for their fundamental rights.
Kashmir Day, observed annually on February 5, holds significant importance for Pakistan and Kashmiri communities worldwide. It is a day dedicated to reaffirming unwavering support for Kashmiris in their pursuit of self-determination. Through various demonstrations and rallies, Pakistan continues to highlight the plight of Kashmiris and urges the international community to address ongoing human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The SBP also took this opportunity to call upon global institutions to intervene and ensure the just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Pakistan remains steadfast in advocating for a peaceful resolution that upholds the rights of Kashmiris.
To minimize inconvenience for customers, the SBP has instructed all banks to ensure the continuous operation of ATMs and online banking services. Despite the physical closure of bank branches, the SBP has urged financial institutions to facilitate smooth digital transactions so that customers can access essential banking services without disruption.
Furthermore, the SBP has advised the general public to plan their financial transactions in advance, considering the nationwide closure of banks on Kashmir Day. By ensuring seamless digital banking operations, the SBP aims to mitigate any disruptions in financial activities and uphold public convenience.
The SBP’s announcement reflects its commitment to national observances while prioritizing financial accessibility for the public. As Pakistan stands in solidarity with Kashmir, the banking sector, under the directives of SBP, remains prepared to support customers through alternative banking channels.
