Shubman Gill, the emerging star from India, has surged to the summit of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Batting Rankings, displacing Babar Azam from his reign as the No.1 ODI batter in the world.
Gill’s ascent to the top spot is a testament to his impressive performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he notched scores of 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa, accumulating a total of 219 runs across six innings.
This achievement not only propels him to the pinnacle of ODI batting but also makes him the fourth player from India to claim the coveted No.1 ranking, joining the ranks of cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam, who held the No.1 spot for over two years, now finds himself in second place with 282 runs from eight innings at the World Cup, trailing Gill by six rating points.
India’s dominance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup doesn’t stop at batting. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj also reached new heights, becoming the No.1 ODI bowler after taking 10 wickets in the tournament.
This impressive performance is part of a major shake-up in both the batting and bowling ODI rankings, driven by standout displays in the World Cup.
Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian team, jumped three places to secure the fourth spot on the ODI batting rankings, closely trailing South Africa’s Quinton de Kock. Kohli’s stellar performance at the World Cup, where he amassed 543 runs, played a crucial role in his ascent.
Additionally, Shreyas Iyer made a remarkable leap, climbing 17 places to the 18th position in the list of ODI batters. Fakhar Zaman from Pakistan and Ibrahim Zadran from Afghanistan also made notable progress, moving up to the 11th and 12th spots, respectively.
The landscape of the ODI bowler rankings has undergone a significant transformation since the World Cup commenced. Four Indian bowlers have secured their places in the top 10, with Siraj leading the pack as the No.1 ODI bowler. His compatriots, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami, occupy the fourth, eighth, and tenth positions, respectively.
South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj moved up two places to second, while Australia’s Adam Zampa claimed the third spot. Shaheen Afridi, last week’s No.1 ranked ODI bowler, now shares the fifth position with Josh Hazlewood.
The World Cup’s leading wicket-taker, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, has skyrocketed 31 places to reach the 45th position in the ODI bowler rankings. India’s Ravindra Jadeja and South Africa’s Marco Jansen also made significant strides, moving up eight and nine places, respectively.
Despite an early exit from the World Cup due to injury, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan retains his status as the No.1 ranked all-rounder. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell climbed two places to the sixth position after his outstanding performance against Afghanistan in Mumbai.
