Provincial government announces holiday across Sindh to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has declared Friday, August 14, 2026, a public holiday across the province on the occasion of Independence Day.

According to a notification issued by the Government of Sindh, the holiday will be observed throughout the province in accordance with the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day.

The notification stated that the holiday will apply to all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils operating under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh.

However, essential services will remain operational during the public holiday to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critical services to citizens.

Pakistan celebrates Independence Day every year on August 14 to commemorate the country’s independence from British rule in 1947.

The day is marked by national celebrations, flag-hoisting ceremonies, special events and patriotic activities across the country. Government buildings, public institutions and private establishments traditionally display the national flag as part of the celebrations.

The Sindh government’s announcement means government employees and other institutions covered by the notification will observe a holiday on Friday.

The provincial authorities have also clarified that departments and services classified as essential will continue their operations despite the public holiday.

The announcement comes ahead of Independence Day celebrations across Pakistan, with preparations expected to include official ceremonies, cultural programmes and other activities highlighting the country’s history and national identity.
