Smith Expects Neser, Boland to Shine in World Test Championship Final

Former Australian captain Steve Smith expressed his confidence in the abilities of Michael Neser and Scott Boland to make a significant impact if selected for the upcoming World Test Championship Final between Australia and India.

The match is scheduled to take place at The Oval in London on June 07, 2023. Smith’s remarks came as Australia had to make adjustments to their bowling attack due to the injury of Josh Hazlewood, who will be unavailable for the match.

Smith praised Michael Neser, who was chosen as Hazlewood’s replacement in the Australian squad, stating that he possesses the necessary skills to seamlessly integrate into the playing XI and leave a lasting impression.

Smith shared his faith in Neser, describing him as a high-quality performer and recalling his impressive bowling performance against Glamorgan a few weeks ago.

He emphasized Neser’s diverse skill set, including his ability to deliver inswingers on flatter wickets, as well as his competence in batting. Smith confidently asserted that if given the opportunity, Neser would excel in his role.

Regarding Scott Boland, Smith highlighted the bowler’s proficiency in maintaining a good length, hitting the top of the stumps, and employing seam and swing to trouble batsmen.

Despite Boland’s limited Test experience away from home and his lack of wickets outside Australia, Smith believed that the 34-year-old possesses the necessary skills to pose a challenge to the Indian team if he receives the nod for selection.

Smith also discussed the composition of the Australian bowling attack, suggesting that Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, captain Pat Cummins, and all-rounder Cameron Green are likely to be part of the team alongside either Boland or Neser.

In contrast, he noted that India might opt for two spinners in their attack but expected seam and swing to be the crucial factors in the Test match played in unfamiliar conditions. Smith singled out Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj as the primary threats in the Indian bowling unit.

Steve Smith’s belief in the capabilities of Michael Neser and Scott Boland to make a strong impact in the World Test Championship Final demonstrates Australia’s confidence in their bowling options despite the absence of Josh Hazlewood.

The match between Australia and India is expected to showcase seam and swing as the defining features, setting the stage for an exciting contest between the two teams in alien conditions.
