Tom Holland and Zendaya’s Marvel blockbuster beats Avengers: Endgame’s record after reaching milestone in seven days
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved another major box office milestone, becoming the fastest film ever to surpass $500 million at the North American box office, according to Deadline.
The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios release reached the landmark figure in just seven days, beating the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame, which crossed the same milestone in eight days following its release.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the latest Spider-Man instalment has become the 23rd film in history to earn more than $500 million domestically.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day sets new box office record
The latest Marvel blockbuster has continued the franchise’s strong theatrical performance, surpassing previous milestones achieved by some of the biggest films in cinema history.
The record was previously held by Avengers: Endgame, which reached $500 million domestically after eight days, while Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains the highest-grossing North American film of all time with $936.6 million.
However, The Force Awakens took 10 days to cross the $500 million mark.
The previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, reached the same milestone after 12 days in theatres.
Film expected to cross $500 million with strong momentum
According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to add around $27 million or more in the United States and Canada on Thursday, pushing its estimated domestic box office total to approximately $508.8 million.
The film has benefited from increased access to premium cinema formats after facing limited availability during its opening weekend due to The Odyssey occupying several premium screens.
IMAX and other premium large-format theatres are now being shared between the two major releases, allowing Brand New Day to expand its premium screenings ahead of its second weekend.
Spider-Man blockbuster maintains strong weekday performance
The superhero film also recorded impressive weekday results, earning $32.7 million on Wednesday.
The figure marks the second-highest Wednesday gross ever recorded for a non-opening day release, trailing only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $38 million on December 23, 2015.
With strong audience demand and continued premium-screen availability, the film is heading into its second weekend with industry observers watching whether it can challenge the record for the biggest second weekend at the domestic box office.
