Tecno Camon 40 Premier 5G battery life and charging review

After extensive testing of the Tecno Camon 40 Premier 5G, we found that its battery performance is more of an incremental step than a leap forward.

Despite switching to silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery tech, the battery capacity only saw a minor bump from 5,000mAh on the Camon 30 Premier to 5,100mAh on the Camon 40 Premier. On paper, with a more efficient Dimensity 8350 chipset and a slightly smaller 6.67” LTPO display, the latest Camon flagship should have offered better endurance. However, in actual testing, the opposite proved true.

In real-world scenarios, the Tecno Camon 40 Premier fell short of expectations. Compared to its predecessor, the Camon 30 Premier, the new model consistently scored lower across all endurance categories, including web browsing, video playback, and gaming. Most notably, the Camon 30 Premier lasted over four hours longer in video playback, despite having a larger screen. This makes the older Camon device a better option for media enthusiasts concerned with longevity.

When stacked up against other Dimensity 8350 phones, like the Infinix Note 50 Pro+ and Oppo Reno13 Pro, the Tecno Camon 40 Premier lagged behind, with only marginal gains in charging speed to show for it. The Camon 40 Premier does ship with a 70W fast charger, a welcome inclusion in today’s market. However, users must manually activate “Hyper Mode” from the lock screen to unlock full charging speed—otherwise, the phone defaults to a slower “Smart Mode.”

Even in Hyper Mode, charging improvements were modest. The Camon 40 Premier charged to 75% in 30 minutes, slightly behind competitors like the Poco X7 Pro and Infinix Note 50 Pro+, which use 90W and 100W chargers respectively. Full charge times weren’t dramatically different between Smart and Hyper modes, with the latter saving only a couple of minutes.

Verdict: While the Tecno Camon 40 Premier 5G offers a sleek design and faster silicon under the hood, its battery life is a step back. Charging is reasonably quick, but not groundbreaking. Ultimately, the Camon 30 Premier or even the Camon 40 Pro might offer better overall battery value in the Camon lineup.
