Islamabad, November 30, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall over hills for upper parts of the country on Sunday, December 1, 2024. According to the PMD, a westerly weather system currently influencing the western and upper regions of Pakistan is expected to bring significant weather activity.
In its detailed forecast, the PMD stated that rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in hilly areas, is likely in north Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and the Potohar region. Meanwhile, cold and dry weather is expected to prevail in the rest of the country. Morning hours in Punjab’s plains and upper Sindh may witness patches of smog or fog, reducing visibility in isolated areas.
Current Synoptic Situation
The westerly wave, which is responsible for this weather activity, continues to affect parts of Pakistan. Its impact is being felt primarily in the northern and eastern regions of Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, where similar weather conditions were observed on Saturday.
Rainfall and Past Weather Conditions
Over the past 24 hours, rain accompanied by thunderstorms occurred in scattered locations across northern and eastern Balochistan, while isolated showers were reported in the Potohar region, central and southern Punjab, upper Sindh, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Snowfall was also observed in higher elevations.
Significant rainfall recorded includes:
• Balochistan: Khuzdar (60 mm), Loralai (16 mm), Bar Khan (14 mm), Zhob (11 mm).
• Punjab: Fort Munro (14 mm), Noorpur Thal (6 mm), Layyah (5 mm).
• Sindh: Jacobabad (6 mm).
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Kalam (3 mm).
Lowest Temperatures Recorded Today
Chilly conditions persist, with the lowest minimum temperatures recorded in Leh (-7°C), Skardu (-6°C), and Gupis (-3°C).
As the westerly system progresses, residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions, particularly those in hilly regions where snowfall could disrupt travel and communication. Smog-prone areas should exercise caution during morning commutes.
