Tom Cruise-led film Digger has reportedly suffered a major box-office setback, with Warner Bros. facing an estimated loss of around $245 million, according to Variety.
The film was reportedly produced on a budget of $180 million, with an additional $100 million spent on marketing and promotion, taking the overall investment to approximately $280 million.
However, Digger opened with just $20 million at the box office, before its earnings slumped by 60% in the second week. The weak opening and sharp decline have raised concerns about the film’s commercial performance, as the initial weeks are often crucial in determining whether a release can build momentum and attract wider audiences.
Despite the reported financial setback, Cruise has not publicly focused on the film’s box-office figures.
In an earlier post on X, the actor celebrated the film’s theatrical release and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with its cast and crew.
“Digger is officially in theatres, and I am so honoured to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists,” Cruise wrote.
He also praised the team’s commitment, adding: “Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable, and I’m so proud of what we created.”
While Cruise’s message highlighted the creative experience behind the production, the reported losses underline the financial risks associated with high-budget films when ticket sales fall short of expectations.
