WhatsApp tests encrypted cloud storage backup for iPhone users

WhatsApp is expanding testing of its own encrypted cloud storage service to iPhone users, offering an alternative to Apple’s iCloud for backing up chats as the Meta-owned messaging platform continues to enhance privacy features.

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.28.10.16, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp offers alternative to iCloud and Google Drive

Currently, WhatsApp users on Android back up their chats to Google Drive, while iPhone users rely on iCloud.

The new feature will allow users on both platforms to choose between their existing cloud provider and WhatsApp’s own encrypted cloud storage service.

The service is expected to include 2GB of free cloud storage for chat backups.

Paid storage plans under consideration

WhatsApp is also reportedly exploring paid storage options for users who require additional space.

According to reports, a 50GB cloud storage plan could be offered for $0.99 per month, although Meta has not officially confirmed pricing or launch details.

End-to-end encryption enabled by default

Chat backups stored on WhatsApp’s cloud platform will be protected with end-to-end encryption by default.

Users will be able to secure their backups using a passkey, a password or a 64-digit encryption key.

Unlike Google Drive and iCloud backups, where encryption remains optional, WhatsApp’s cloud storage will require encryption unless users switch back to their existing cloud provider.

Public release still pending

The encrypted cloud storage feature remains under development for both Android and iOS devices.

Meta has not announced a release date, but the feature is expected to undergo broader beta testing before being rolled out to all WhatsApp users worldwide.
