Reported tensions between Zendaya and Sam Levinson have emerged as the highly anticipated third season of Euphoria premieres, adding to ongoing behind-the-scenes scrutiny surrounding the hit HBO production.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Vanity Fair reported that the previously close creative relationship between the lead actor and the showrunner became strained during the prolonged gap between the second and third seasons. The delay, spanning several years, has been attributed publicly to industry disruptions and scheduling conflicts, though insiders suggest additional complexities.

Zendaya, who portrays Rue Bennett, notably does not hold an executive producer credit for the third season after being credited in the first two instalments. One source indicated the shift was largely due to logistical constraints rather than creative disagreements.

“Zendaya had an incredibly demanding shooting schedule in 2025 and several major releases this year, limiting her ability to take on an executive producer role,” the source said, adding that she remained actively involved in shaping the storyline and approving key creative decisions.

Speculation intensified following a widely circulated video from the season premiere, in which Zendaya appeared to avoid posing for photographs with Levinson on the red carpet, quickly moving past him with her team. The clip gained traction on social media platforms, fueling discussion about their working relationship.

Levinson has previously cited multiple factors behind the show’s delay, including industry strikes, cast availability, and efforts to honour late cast members. However, sources suggest that creative direction and production challenges may also have contributed.

The third season of Euphoria is set five years after the events of the previous instalment, following its characters as they transition into adulthood while confronting themes of identity, redemption, and morality.

Despite reported tensions, industry observers note that the show remains one of HBO’s flagship dramas, with strong audience anticipation likely to sustain its success.
