Hasaranga, Gardner Crowned ICC Players of the Month

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner have been recognized for their outstanding performances in June 2023, as they were announced as the ICC Men’s and Women’s Players of the Month by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Hasaranga, the 25-year-old spinner, earned the prestigious title after a remarkable display of skill and consistency throughout the month.

Claiming a total of 26 wickets at an exceptional average of 10, he notably achieved three consecutive five-wicket hauls.

His impressive performance also contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s qualification for the 50-over World Cup during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Gardner, on the other hand, secured the women’s award following her exceptional contributions in the one-off Test against England at Trent Bridge.

Displaying her prowess as an all-rounder, Gardner took 12 wickets, including a remarkable 8/66 in the second innings. Additionally, she showcased her batting skills by scoring 40 runs during Australia’s first innings.

This recognition marks Gardner’s third monthly award in her career, while Hasaranga claims his first accolade.

The competition for the honors was fierce, with Gardner prevailing over Tammy Beaumont and Hayley Mathews, prominent figures in the Ashes rivalry. Hasaranga faced strong opposition from Australian batter Travis Head and Zimbabwe opener Sean Williams.

Hasaranga’s achievements were not only limited to the monthly award, as he etched his name in the record books.

He became only the second player in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket to accomplish three consecutive five-wicket hauls, joining the legendary Waqar Younis from Pakistan, who achieved the feat in 1990.

Hasaranga’s remarkable figures of 6/24 against the UAE were followed by two five-wicket hauls against Oman and Ireland.

Meanwhile, Gardner’s exceptional performance during the one-off Test against England further solidified her reputation as one of the premier all-rounders in women’s cricket.

Her 8/66 figures in the second innings were the second-best recorded in women’s Tests, helping Australia secure an early advantage in the Ashes series.

With their exceptional performances, Hasaranga and Gardner have rightfully earned the titles of ICC Men’s and Women’s Players of the Month for June 2023, respectively.
