British Council cancels exams in Lahore over security concerns

Lahore – May 8, 2025: The British Council has announced the cancellation of all exams scheduled in Lahore for Thursday, May 8, due to security concerns.

The decision affects several exams including GCE, IGCSE, IELTS, and University of London papers that were planned for the afternoon session across all exam centers in the city.

In an official statement issued today, the British Council said the step was taken after carefully assessing the current situation in Lahore. “Due to the developing circumstances, and in agreement with the relevant exam boards, the British Council has cancelled all exams scheduled for the PM session on Thursday, May 8, 2025. This decision has been made in the best interest of students, exam staff, and other stakeholders,” the statement read.

Although the British Council did not provide specific details, the move comes on a day when tensions have escalated between Pakistan and India. Reports suggest drone activity and strikes were observed in different regions of Pakistan earlier today, contributing to the tense environment.

The British Council emphasized that its top priority is the safety and well-being of all candidates and staff. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will share further updates as needed. For the latest information, please keep checking our official website and social media channels,” the Council advised.

Students who are registered through schools have been asked to stay in touch with their respective institutions. Private candidates are encouraged to contact the British Council’s Customer Services centre directly for guidance and rescheduling options.

The British Council, which has been conducting international exams in Pakistan for decades, assured students and parents that alternative arrangements will be explored. Further details about rescheduling will be communicated once the situation improves.

This is not the first time exams have been disrupted due to external events, but the British Council reiterated its commitment to maintaining exam integrity while ensuring safety remains a top priority.
