Caterham Unveils Project V: Lightweight Electric Coupé

Caterham has introduced Project V, an innovative concept car that combines lightweight design with electric power. The fully-electric coupé, envisioned by Chief Designer Anthony Jannarelly and brought to life by renowned Italian engineering firm Italdesign, is expected to hit the market in late 2025 or early 2026.

Staying true to Caterham’s minimalist design philosophy, Project V embraces simplicity and lightweight construction, similar to the iconic Seven model. To achieve a target kerb weight of 1,190kg (2+1 configuration), Caterham plans to employ an innovative chassis made from a combination of carbon fibre and aluminium composite materials.

Bob Laishley, CEO of Caterham Cars Ltd and COO of Caterham EVo, expressed that Project V goes beyond being a mere concept or design study. The company has dedicated significant effort to ensure the feasibility of engineering and production throughout the development process. Laishley emphasized the importance of maintaining Caterham’s DNA, which revolves around being lightweight, simple, and providing an unparalleled driving experience.

Laishley further stated that Project V aligns with Caterham’s ambition to sustainably grow the company while exploring electrification. Pending the progress of development and technical capabilities, Caterham aims to launch Project V by late 2025 or early 2026, with a target starting price below £80,000.

Project V’s Electric Powertrain: Powerful and Efficient

The heart of Project V lies in its battery electric powertrain, featuring a single 200kW (272PS) motor mounted on the rear axle. The vehicle boasts a 55kWh USOC lithium-ion battery pack with advanced thermal management, capable of recharging from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes using a 150kW DC rapid charger.

With a swift acceleration of under 4.5 seconds for 0-62mph (100kph), Project V aims for a top speed of 143mph (230kph) and an estimated range of 249 miles (400km) based on WLTP testing standards.

Versatile Seating and Intuitive Technology:

Project V features a 2+1 seating layout, with an optional 2+2 arrangement. This configuration enhances accessibility and comfort for rear seat passengers while offering flexibility to prospective owners. The interior showcases a straightforward, driver-centric infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, complemented by a digital instrument cluster for displaying essential information. Drivers can select between Normal, Sport, and Sprint driving modes, which adapt the acceleration and steering characteristics for different driving environments.

Superb Handling and Performance Features:

The concept vehicle incorporates double wishbone suspension at the front and rear, fully adjustable geometry, electrically assisted power steering, high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (19″ front and 20″ rear), and all-round brake discs with high-performance calipers.

Chief Designer Anthony Jannarelly described the design philosophy of Project V as an extension of the Caterham Seven’s simplicity and minimalism. The focus was on creating a captivating and timeless silhouette for the sports coupé architecture. Every design element had to justify its existence from a weight perspective to maintain lightness and optimize driver engagement.
