Actress says artificial intelligence cannot replace the “soul” behind true art

Demi Moore has urged Hollywood to embrace artificial intelligence rather than resist it, saying the entertainment industry must learn how to work alongside rapidly evolving technology.

Speaking during the jury press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, Moore acknowledged that artificial intelligence is becoming an unavoidable part of the creative landscape.

“AI is here,” Moore said, adding that the film industry must “find ways in which we can work with it.”

Moore warns against resisting AI

The actress cautioned that attempting to completely fight the rise of artificial intelligence would ultimately be unsuccessful.

“It’s a battle that we will lose,” she said during the discussion at Cannes.

When asked whether Hollywood is doing enough to regulate AI technology, Moore admitted she was uncertain but suggested that current efforts may not be sufficient.

“I don’t know the answer to that. And so my inclination would be to say probably not,” she stated.

Despite supporting the use of AI in some areas, Moore stressed that technology cannot replace the emotional and spiritual essence behind artistic creation.

“There’s beautiful aspects to being able to utilize it,” she said while discussing the potential advantages of artificial intelligence.

However, she emphasized that genuine artistic expression remains uniquely human.

“What it can never replace is what true art comes from … the soul,” Moore added.

Cannes return after ‘The Substance’

Moore’s appearance at Cannes comes after the success of The Substance, the body horror film that marked her previous appearance at the prestigious festival.

The actress is serving on the main competition jury for this year’s edition of Cannes alongside several internationally recognized filmmakers and actors.

Star-studded Cannes jury lineup

Moore is joined on the Cannes competition jury by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, actress Ruth Negga, Belgian director Laura Wandel, Chilean filmmaker Diego Céspedes, actor Isaach de Bankolé, screenwriter Paul Laverty, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, and actor Stellan Skarsgård.

The Cannes Film Festival remains one of the world’s most influential events for international cinema and creative discussions surrounding the future of filmmaking.
