Business leaders urge modern livestock management and export-focused policies to capture growing global halal meat demand

KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has called for comprehensive reforms in the livestock sector to help Pakistan increase meat exports and capitalise on rising global demand for halal food products.

Speaking to a delegation of progressive farmers led by Nisar Ahmad Hanif Gujjar, FPCCI Regional Committee on Food Convener Shahid Imran said Pakistan possesses significant potential to expand meat exports, but improvements in livestock management, infrastructure and regulatory standards are essential to compete effectively in international markets.

He noted that Pakistan ranks among the world’s leading livestock-producing countries and has the resources needed to strengthen its position in the global halal food industry.

Modernisation Key to Expanding Meat Exports

Shahid Imran stressed that enhancing meat exports requires investment in modern breeding programmes, disease control systems, cold-chain infrastructure and internationally recognised certification mechanisms.

He said global demand for halal food products continues to rise in both Muslim-majority and non-Muslim countries, creating significant opportunities for Pakistan’s livestock sector.

“The livestock sector can become one of the strongest pillars of Pakistan’s economy if supported through targeted investment and practical reforms,” he said.

According to industry experts, improving production efficiency and meeting international quality standards could significantly increase Pakistan’s meat exports over the coming years.

Province-Specific Policies Recommended

The FPCCI representative also advocated province-specific development strategies to strengthen meat exports and improve livestock productivity.

He said each province has distinct climatic conditions, livestock breeds and production capabilities, requiring tailored policy measures to maximise growth.

Punjab, with its extensive irrigated farmland and strong dairy farming base, offers substantial opportunities to support livestock expansion and boost meat exports, he added.

Rural Women Play Vital Role

Shahid Imran highlighted the contribution of rural women to livestock farming, noting their involvement in animal care, milk production and dairy processing activities.

He said strengthening the livestock sector would not only increase meat exports but also enhance income opportunities and economic empowerment for women in rural communities.

Balochistan Offers Untapped Potential

The FPCCI convener identified Balochistan as a region with considerable potential for livestock development and future meat exports.

He said investment in modern livestock markets, veterinary services, wool processing facilities and export-oriented meat infrastructure could transform the province into a major production hub.

With international demand for halal and organic products rising, experts believe Pakistan can significantly expand meat exports through better livestock management, improved infrastructure and stronger compliance with global standards.
