Fritz Ends Zverev’s Streak, Makes ATP Finals History

Taylor Fritz made history on Saturday, becoming the first American since 2006 to reach the title match at the ATP Finals. The world number five defeated Alexander Zverev, ranked second globally, in a thrilling three-set contest, securing a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) victory after two hours and 20 minutes of intense tennis.

Fritz’s win marked the end of Zverev’s eight-match winning streak and dashed the German’s hopes of claiming a third ATP Finals title. In the deciding set, Fritz fended off numerous break points, showcasing resilience and composure under pressure. He sealed the match with a spectacular forehand winner, earning his place in Sunday’s final.

The 27-year-old American will now face either Italy’s world number one Jannik Sinner, a crowd favorite in Turin, or Norway’s Casper Ruud, who is known for his tactical prowess on the court.

Zverev, who had dominated the group stage with flawless performances, appeared poised to add another prestigious title to his name. However, Fritz, who had already won their last three encounters, proved to be the more determined player in key moments.

In the opening set, Fritz capitalized on a rare lapse by Zverev, breaking his serve for the first time in the tournament. Zverev rebounded strongly in the second set, leveling the match and carrying momentum into the decider.

The final set was a nail-biter, with Zverev pressuring Fritz with break points at 2-2 and 5-5. Fritz, however, held his ground with clutch serving and precise shot-making. In the tiebreak, the American gained an early advantage and never looked back, holding his nerve to close out the match and match James Blake’s feat of reaching the final in 2006.

“I’m incredibly proud of how I stayed focused and kept fighting,” Fritz said after the match. “Zverev is an incredible player, and this win means a lot to me as I look to end the season on a high.”

With this victory, Fritz continues to solidify his position among the world’s elite players. He now has the chance to secure the biggest title of his career and become the first American ATP Finals champion since Pete Sampras in 1999.
