Google is expanding its AI capabilities by introducing Gemini AI to the Google Messages app. This rollout follows the recent integration of the AI service into Gmail, as announced by the tech giant over a week ago. While the feature isn’t yet widely available, users can expect to see it in their Messages app soon.
Gemini AI, which previously existed as a standalone app on Android, offers users the convenience of accessing AI features directly within the Messages app. This integration allows users to ask questions or give instructions without needing to exit their ongoing conversations, streamlining their messaging experience.
A notable addition with this update is a new floating action button that appears above the “Start chat” button in the lower-right corner of the app. This button provides quick and easy access to Gemini AI, enhancing user interaction with the AI service.
However, users should be aware of certain privacy aspects when using Gemini AI. The AI does not read private conversations, ensuring that user privacy is maintained. Nevertheless, chats with the AI chatbot are not end-to-end encrypted, which means users should be cautious about sharing sensitive information. By default, chat history with Gemini AI is stored for up to 18 months, but users have the option to adjust this retention period to either 36 months or as short as three months.
Additionally, Gemini AI does not track users’ precise locations. It uses general location information derived from the user’s IP address or home address to generate relevant responses. This approach ensures that while the AI can provide location-based information, it does so without compromising the user’s exact whereabouts.
The introduction of Gemini AI to the Google Messages app marks another step in Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services with advanced AI capabilities. As users gradually gain access to this new feature, it is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and functionality of their messaging interactions.
For now, users will need to be patient as the update rolls out more broadly. Once fully implemented, Gemini AI in Google Messages promises to offer a seamless and enhanced messaging experience, making it easier than ever to interact with AI on the go.
