Islamabad, July 12, 2023 – A delegation from Google held a meeting with Pakistani authorities on Wednesday to discuss data protection matters.
The meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Law and Justice, aimed to brief officials on the importance of data protection and discuss the ongoing consideration of a personal data protection bill.

Chaired by Parliamentary Secretary Mehnaz Akbar Aziz, the meeting saw the presence of Barrister Ambreen Abbasi alongside the Google delegation. In their briefing, the delegation highlighted the significance of the personal data protection bill, which focuses on safeguarding sensitive personal information and promoting data localization.
The proposed bill prioritizes the protection of individuals’ personal data from any form of abuse or exploitation. As part of the discussions, participants emphasized the need to establish clear parameters for data regulation. The Parliamentary Secretary stressed that the security of the state must never be compromised, asserting that any measures contradicting this principle would not be permitted.

During the meeting, the Google delegation commended the Government of Pakistan for its policy alignment in comparison to neighboring countries, including India.
