House of the Dragon Season 3 continued to build momentum in Episode 4, shifting its focus toward political intrigue as Lord Ormund Hightower emerged as a pivotal figure in the escalating civil war between the Greens and the Blacks.
Rather than relying on large-scale battles, the latest episode advances several key storylines that reshape the balance of power across Westeros.
Lord Ormund Hightower takes centre stage
Episode 4 introduces Lord Ormund Hightower as one of the season’s most calculating political players.
After deceiving Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen by sending a false Daeron to King’s Landing, Ormund strengthens his position at Tumbleton while waiting for Prince Aemond and the dragon Vhagar to join his campaign.
His military strategy also places civilians in the middle of the conflict, limiting Rhaenyra’s ability to launch a direct assault.
A ruthless political leader
The episode highlights Ormund’s contrasting leadership style.
He initially appears just by ordering punishment for a Hightower soldier accused of attacking Kat, the wife of Hugh Hammer. However, he later reveals his ruthless side by ordering Daeron to execute Kat’s brother after the man strikes one of his soldiers.
The difficult decision forces Daeron to carry out the execution himself.
Ormund also makes clear his political ambitions, arguing that Daeron would be a more suitable ruler than his surviving brothers and expressing his desire to see him ascend the Iron Throne.
His frustration grows as the long-awaited arrival of Aemond, Vhagar and the Green army is delayed.
Rhaenyra faces growing opposition
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra Targaryen continues to consolidate power in King’s Landing while facing increasing resistance.
Public opinion turns against the queen after graffiti branding her the “Queen of Bastards” appears throughout the city. In response, she orders the Gold Cloaks to identify and punish those responsible.
Elsewhere, Ulf’s requests are dismissed as Rhaenyra attempts to tighten control over her supporters.
Daemon uncovers new secret
Daemon’s storyline also advances as his search leads him to Rhaena and the wild dragon Sheepstealer.
Rather than revealing the discovery, Daemon chooses to conceal the truth from Rhaenyra by offering a false explanation for his actions.
Political tension drives Episode 4
Although Episode 4 features fewer action sequences than earlier instalments, it delivers significant political developments that set the stage for the battles still to come.
House of the Dragon Season 3 consists of eight episodes, with new episodes airing weekly on HBO. The season finale is scheduled to air on August 9, 2026.
