ICC Meeting on Champions Trophy 2025 Hosting Postponed

The much-awaited International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting regarding the hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed. Recent reports suggest that the meeting may be rescheduled to either Sunday or Monday, as both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) need additional time to consult with their respective foreign ministries.

The initial meeting, which was planned for November 29, was adjourned without any concrete decisions being made concerning the hosting of the prestigious tournament. The gathering was convened by the ICC in response to the BCCI’s announcement that it would not send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, which is set to take place between February and March 2025.

Sources revealed that the brief meeting, lasting only 15 minutes, was attended by representatives from the 12 Full Member countries, three representatives from Associate nations, and an independent director, along with the ICC chairman and CEO. Despite the short duration, the key point of contention was Pakistan’s firm opposition to the hybrid model proposed by India.

The hybrid model, which involves holding some matches at neutral venues, was suggested by the BCCI in an effort to avoid travelling to Pakistan. The BCCI proposed that India’s group matches be held in Dubai, instead of Pakistan. However, the PCB has categorically rejected this proposal, insisting that the entire tournament must be held in Pakistan, as initially planned.

The ICC is now exploring various options to resolve the standoff and ensure the Champions Trophy 2025 goes ahead smoothly. Pakistan has repeatedly stated that it will not accept any model that involves spreading the matches across different venues. Reports indicate that the PCB had sent a formal letter to the ICC ahead of the meeting, reaffirming its stance against the hybrid model.

As the dispute continues, all eyes are on the rescheduled meeting, where the ICC will likely attempt to broker a solution that satisfies both nations, amid increasing pressure from cricket fans worldwide.
