State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has refuted claims that the government deliberately slowed down or blocked internet services, instead attributing recent disruptions to the widespread use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

During a recent press conference, the minister clarified the government’s stance and addressed public concerns over internet accessibility issues.

Shaza Fatima emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the country’s IT infrastructure, which she described as crucial for economic growth and global competitiveness. She highlighted ongoing efforts to attract substantial investment into Pakistan’s IT sector, underscoring the importance of a robust digital economy in the modern world.

In line with these objectives, the minister announced the formation of the National Digitalisation Commission, a significant step towards streamlining and accelerating the country’s digital transformation. This commission will play a pivotal role in overseeing the implementation of key digital initiatives and policies.

Further bolstering the IT sector, Shaza Fatima revealed plans to establish IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi, designed to serve as hubs for innovation, research, and development. These parks aim to foster a thriving ecosystem for tech startups and established companies alike, encouraging collaboration and driving technological advancements.

In addition to infrastructure development, the minister discussed the government’s strategic partnerships with global tech giants such as Google and Meta.

These collaborations aim to provide certifications and training for children, equipping the younger generation with essential digital skills for the future job market. She also introduced the Bridge Start Programme, a government initiative with a budget of Rs1 billion, focused on supporting innovative projects and startups.

Addressing the public’s frustration over recent internet disruptions, Shaza Fatima explained that the surge in VPN usage has placed increased pressure on internet services, leading to the observed connectivity issues.

She assured that the government is taking proactive measures to mitigate these disruptions and prevent future occurrences, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to ensuring reliable internet access for all citizens.
