NDMA Warns Thunderstorms for Several Regions of Pakistan

Pakistan Weather

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Monday issued a nationwide alert, warning that thunderstorms accompanied by rain and possible hail are expected across multiple regions of Pakistan over the next 12 to 24 hours.

The advisory aligns with forecasts earlier issued by the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), indicating a continuation of seasonal weather patterns predicted for the April–June period.

Regions Likely to Be Affected

In Punjab, strong winds, lightning and rain are expected in several districts, with isolated hailstorms likely. Major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Multan and nearby areas are expected to experience adverse weather conditions.

Similar conditions are forecast across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Swat and Chitral, where gusty winds and thunderstorms may also bring hail in isolated areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, rain with thunderstorms is expected in areas such as Gilgit, Skardu and Muzaffarabad, along with surrounding districts.

Risk of Flooding and Landslides

The NDMA cautioned that rising temperatures could accelerate glacier and snow melt, increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods and landslides, particularly in northern and mountainous regions.

Authorities have advised citizens to avoid visiting glacial lakes and unstable slopes, while travellers in hilly areas should remain prepared for possible disruptions.

Public Advisory

The NDMA warned that strong winds and hail may damage weak structures, solar panels and vehicles. Citizens are urged to stay indoors during storms and avoid unnecessary travel.

All relevant departments have been directed to remain on high alert and implement precautionary measures. The public is also encouraged to follow official advisories and use the NDMA’s disaster alert mobile application for real-time updates.
