Islamabad, June 16, 2024 – As Eid-ul-Adha approaches, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued its weather forecast for Monday, June 17, 2024.
The forecast predicts predominantly hot and dry weather across most of the country, with particularly intense heat expected in central and southern regions.
According to the Pakistan Met Office, continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, contributing to the overall hot and dry conditions. However, a shallow westerly wave is anticipated to approach the northern areas tonight, bringing a change in weather patterns for some regions.
On Eid-ul-Adha, while most of Pakistan will experience the sweltering heat, there is a glimmer of relief for residents in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and upper Punjab. These areas are likely to witness windstorms and isolated thunderstorms or rain, providing a brief respite from the otherwise oppressive heat.
The forecast for the preceding day, Sunday, June 16, 2024, mirrors that of Eid-ul-Adha. Hot and dry conditions will dominate, especially in the central and southern parts of the country. However, in the evening and nighttime, isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms, offering a preview of the weather relief anticipated for Eid day.
Reflecting on the weather over the past 24 hours, the Met Office reported that hot and dry conditions prevailed across most of the country, with southern and central regions experiencing extremely high temperatures. Isolated thunderstorms and rain were recorded in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and southern Punjab. Rainfall measurements showed D.G. Khan receiving 6mm of rain, while Bagrote in Gilgit-Baltistan recorded 2mm.
The recorded highest maximum temperatures yesterday underscored the intensity of the heatwave gripping the nation. Bhakkar and Sibbi both sizzled at 48°C, followed closely by Noorpur Thal at 47°C. Other cities including Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Jacobabad, Jhelum, Joharabad, Sargodha, D.G. Khan, Layyah, Kasur, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, and Okara recorded temperatures of 45°C.
As families across Pakistan prepare for Eid-ul-Adha, they are advised to take necessary precautions against the heat, especially in central and southern regions. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and taking advantage of cooler indoor environments will be crucial for ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday. Meanwhile, those in the northern regions may want to stay updated with local weather reports for potential rain and thunderstorms.
With the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations on the horizon, the weather forecast serves as an important reminder of the diverse climatic conditions across Pakistan, urging citizens to plan their festivities accordingly.
