Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb encourages faster EV localization, manufacturing, and charging infrastructure development to position Pakistan as a regional new energy vehicle hub.
Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to promoting electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, localization, and sustainable transportation as part of its strategy to emerge as a regional hub for new energy vehicles (NEVs).
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb conveyed this commitment during a meeting with a delegation from BYD Group and Mega Motor Company (MMC). The delegation was led by BYD Group Vice President Liu Xueliang and MMC Chief Executive Officer Aly Khan.
During the meeting, the finance minister welcomed BYD’s growing footprint in Pakistan and highlighted the significance of the BYD-MMC partnership in supporting industrial development.
He noted that the collaboration would contribute to technology transfer, job creation, and export growth while strengthening Pakistan’s automotive sector.
Aurangzeb emphasized that the global automotive industry is rapidly shifting toward electric mobility, making it essential for Pakistan to attract investments that promote technological innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainable industrial development.
He added that the country’s improving macroeconomic indicators and stronger external sector position have created favorable conditions for industrial expansion and foreign investment.
The minister also urged the companies to accelerate efforts related to local vehicle assembly, manufacturing, and the development of EV charging infrastructure.
He stressed that a comprehensive charging network would play a vital role in encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles across Pakistan.
Highlighting the contribution of Chinese companies to Pakistan’s economic progress, Aurangzeb expressed confidence that the BYD-MMC joint venture would further strengthen economic and industrial cooperation between Pakistan and China.
Speaking on the occasion, Liu Xueliang briefed the minister on BYD’s operations and future plans in Pakistan.
He stated that construction of the company’s local manufacturing facility is progressing as scheduled and outlined plans to expand the product lineup, increase localization, introduce advanced charging technologies, and support the country’s EV ecosystem through investment and skills development.
The delegation described Pakistan as a promising market for new energy vehicles and shared its long-term vision of transforming the country into a regional center for EV production and exports.
Plans were also discussed to collaborate with local partners on charging infrastructure and provide training opportunities for Pakistani engineers and technicians.
Meanwhile, Aly Khan reaffirmed that Pakistan remains a strategic market in BYD’s global expansion strategy.
He highlighted the progress of the manufacturing project and presented a phased localization roadmap aimed at increasing local content through partnerships with domestic suppliers, strengthening the automotive value chain and industrial base.
The meeting also reviewed the future prospects of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Pakistan.
