Islamabad, December 13, 2024 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to take further steps in reducing electricity tariffs and to fast-track the implementation of plans for future power generation projects.
In a high-level meeting convened to discuss Pakistan’s power sector and its future energy plans, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of prioritizing low-cost power projects that harness local resources.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz was briefed on the progress of ongoing hydroelectric projects across the country. He expressed satisfaction with the advancements but stressed that these projects should continue to be a focal point of the country’s energy strategy, as they provide environmentally friendly and cost-effective electricity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also urged the transition of Pakistan’s existing power generation capacity to solar energy. He noted that globally, solar energy is increasingly being used to produce low-cost, sustainable electricity and pointed out that Pakistan is well-positioned to harness its vast solar energy potential.
Additionally, PM Shehbaz was updated on the status of the government’s efforts to phase out inefficient power plants, which consume excessive fuel while generating minimal electricity. He instructed that such outdated plants be closed immediately, arguing that their closure would not only save valuable foreign exchange but also significantly reduce electricity costs for consumers.
The Prime Minister also issued a strong directive against officials who may be obstructing much-needed reforms in the power sector. He called for immediate action to address any such delays and emphasized the need for swift reforms in Pakistan’s electricity transmission system. He instructed that the power grid be upgraded to meet international standards and that modern technology be implemented for more efficient selection and transmission of low-cost electricity.
In his closing remarks, PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of completing all power sector reforms within the specified timeline. The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, including Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Dr. Musadik Malik, and Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik, along with other high-ranking officials.
