ISLAMABAD, April 9, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed a landmark $2 billion investment from the global shipping giant AP Moller – Maersk, describing it as a transformative move for Pakistan’s maritime and trade infrastructure.
This major development marks a new chapter in the government’s push to elevate Pakistan’s role as a strategic trade and logistics hub in the region.
In a high-level meeting with Robert Maersk, Chairman of the Board at AP Moller – Maersk, PM Shehbaz expressed confidence that this investment would significantly strengthen the country’s maritime capabilities. Shehbaz directed relevant authorities to fast-track the formalization of the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed with Maersk last year, urging swift progress toward legally binding agreements.
To ensure smooth implementation, Shehbaz ordered the formation of a technical working group dedicated to preparing a comprehensive maritime collaboration framework. He emphasized the need for immediate and effective recommendations within a month to remove any bureaucratic delays that could hinder progress.
PM Shehbaz highlighted the immense potential of Pakistan’s coastline and marine resources, asserting that Maersk’s investment would help unlock long-term economic gains. “Pakistan is strategically positioned to become a vital economic corridor for regional transit trade,” said Shehbaz, reiterating his vision to establish world-class port infrastructure.
During the meeting, Robert Maersk acknowledged Pakistan’s growing regional relevance and praised Shehbaz’s economic vision. He noted that Maersk’s clients around the globe were increasingly looking to Pakistan as a promising destination for trade and investment. Maersk also underscored the company’s historical connection to Pakistan, recalling that its first vessel docked in the country back in 1924.
Maersk reaffirmed the company’s commitment to not only expand operations but also invest in modernizing seaports using cutting-edge logistics technologies. “We see Pakistan as an integral player in Central Asia’s trade routes,” said Maersk, while also responding positively to Shehbaz’s invitation to explore further investment avenues.
With Shehbaz at the helm, and Maersk’s backing, Pakistan’s maritime sector appears set for a significant transformation—one that promises to bolster trade, generate employment, and position the country firmly on the global logistics map.
