PMD Forecasts Thunderstorms for KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad, September 15, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted thunderstorms for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, September 16, 2024. The forecast comes amid prevailing hot and dry conditions across most parts of the country.

In its weather update for Monday, the PMD has indicated that while the majority of Pakistan will experience hot and dry weather, isolated rain, wind, and thunderstorms are expected in the upper regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. These thunderstorms could bring localized rain, offering temporary relief from the ongoing heat in these areas.

Synoptic Situation

The PMD reported that continental air continues to dominate most of Pakistan, contributing to the hot and dry weather conditions. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is present over western Balochistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is expected to contribute to the thunderstorms forecasted for Monday. These westerly waves are often associated with wind and rain in the region, particularly affecting the northern areas of the country.

Sunday’s Weather – September 15, 2024

For Sunday, September 15, 2024, the PMD predicted mainly dry conditions for most areas of Pakistan. However, isolated rain and thunderstorms are likely to occur in South West Balochistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. These areas are expected to experience light showers, though no widespread rain is anticipated.

Weather in the Past 24 Hours

During the past 24 hours, hot and dry weather prevailed across most of the country, with the exception of isolated rainfall in Kasur and parts of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to PMD reports, the following rainfall measurements were recorded:

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Chitral (5 mm), Pattan, Drosh, Peshawar (1 mm)

• Punjab: Kasur (4 mm)

The highest maximum temperatures recorded for Sunday were:

• Sibbi: 40°C

• Dalbandin, Nokkundi, Turbat: 39°C

These high temperatures reflect the ongoing heatwave that has affected many parts of the country. However, with thunderstorms on the horizon for parts of KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan, some relief from the heat is expected.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary precautions during thunderstorms, such as avoiding open spaces and securing outdoor objects.
