Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has announced scheduled maintenance work on one of its submarine cables, warning customers across the country about possible internet speed degradation from May 11 to May 18, 2026.
In a statement shared on social media, PTCL said the maintenance activity is being carried out by an international cable consortium to repair a fault in the submarine cable system.
“A maintenance activity is planned on one of our Submarine cables to repair a fault by international cable consortium,” the company stated.
According to PTCL, the maintenance work will begin on May 11 and may continue until May 18.
Internet users may face slower connectivity
The telecom operator warned that internet services could be affected during the maintenance period, especially during peak evening hours.
“During this period, customers may face Internet service degradation during evening hours,” the company added.
PTCL also apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the maintenance activity.
Second internet degradation in two months
This marks the second such maintenance-related disruption in recent months.
Previously, PTCL carried out submarine cable maintenance work between April 14 and April 20, during which many users also experienced slower internet speeds and connectivity issues.
Pakistan moves toward 5G rollout
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s telecom sector has recently taken steps toward the rollout of 5G services.
Last month, telecom operators began introducing 5G services in selected areas after receiving spectrum licences during a ceremony in Islamabad attended by Shehbaz Sharif.
Earlier in March, the government completed a spectrum auction in Islamabad, generating $507 million through the sale of 480 megahertz of spectrum.
Three telecom operators participated in bidding for the 2,600MHz band, which is considered a key frequency range for enabling 5G connectivity and faster mobile internet services.
