Punjab Braces for Smog and Dense Fog Amid Cold Spell

Islamabad, November 14, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting significant smog and dense fog over Punjab on Friday, November 15, 2024.

The alert warns that poor visibility due to fog and smog may disrupt morning commutes and affect air quality, posing potential health risks for residents, especially in urban areas of the province.

According to the PMD, a westerly wave is currently impacting northern regions of Pakistan and is expected to bring cloudy weather, rain, and thunderstorms to areas including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, upper Punjab, and northeast Balochistan. Higher altitudes in these regions are likely to experience light snowfall. Meanwhile, most other parts of the country are anticipated to remain dry with clear skies, and Punjab is expected to face continued smog and dense fog, primarily during the early morning hours.

The PMD stated that while smog and fog are likely to peak during morning hours, they are expected to gradually diminish by the evening or night. This transition may provide some relief to commuters and businesses, though authorities have advised caution as visibility could still be reduced.

Synoptic Overview

The current synoptic situation indicates a westerly wave influencing Pakistan’s northern parts, which is projected to extend to upper areas of the country by tomorrow. This weather system is responsible for the expected rainfall and temperature drops in affected regions, adding to the chilly conditions already prevailing in the north.

Current Weather Conditions

As of today, Thursday, November 14, the country has experienced mainly cold and dry weather in most areas, with isolated showers and thunderstorms reported in parts of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Smog and dense fog have already impacted most areas in Punjab, and this trend is expected to persist into Friday. Notable rainfall over the past 24 hours included 23 mm in Dir, 18 mm in Kalam, and smaller amounts in Drosh, Mirkhani, and Chitral.

Temperatures in the northern regions remain low, with Leh recording a minimum of -3°C, and Skardu and Kalat both at 1°C, indicating the start of the winter season in high-altitude areas.

Health and Safety Advisory

The PMD has advised residents of Punjab to take precautions due to the anticipated smog and fog, which can have adverse health effects, especially on children, the old-age, and individuals with respiratory issues. Authorities are urging the public to limit outdoor activities during peak smog hours, use protective face masks, and keep headlights on low beam when driving.

As Pakistan’s northern regions brace for winter weather, and with smog expected to persist in Punjab, the PMD and local authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, providing regular updates to ensure public safety.
