Red alert issued in Punjab as severe heatwave intensifies

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a red alert across the province due to an intensifying heatwave expected to grip vast regions of Punjab in the coming days.

The PDMA has urged citizens to take necessary precautions as temperatures are forecast to rise sharply, particularly between now and May 19.

The PDMA, in an official statement on Sunday, warned that the ongoing heatwave will further intensify in major cities and low-lying areas of Punjab, posing serious health risks and potential disruption to daily life. Health experts are especially concerned about vulnerable groups such as children, the old-age, and those with existing medical conditions, and have advised them to remain indoors and avoid prolonged exposure to heat.

Speaking to a news channel, a PDMA spokesperson highlighted the importance of staying updated with weather forecasts and official advisories. Tourists planning to visit Murree have been specifically advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert to sudden changes in weather conditions. The spokesperson added that all residents and travelers in Punjab should avoid open spaces during peak heat hours and prepare for possible adverse weather conditions in the evenings.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also predicted strong winds, thundershowers, and rain in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir during the evening and nighttime, which may bring temporary relief to some regions. However, for Punjab, the immediate concern remains the unrelenting heatwave.

The PDMA has instructed all commissioners and deputy commissioners in Punjab to remain on high alert. Emergency services and hospitals have been directed to prepare for potential heatstroke cases and related medical emergencies.

To combat the effects of the heatwave, citizens are advised to drink plenty of water and cold fluids, wear light and loose clothing, and use head coverings when outdoors. Experts recommend avoiding unnecessary outings during peak heat hours and taking cool showers to maintain body temperature.

With the heatwave threatening to intensify in the coming days, authorities in Punjab emphasize the importance of community awareness and collective responsibility to stay safe during this critical weather situation.
