Schedule unveiled for presentation of budget 2025–26 in parliament

Islamabad, May 2, 2025 – The Government of Pakistan has officially finalized the schedule for presenting the budget 2025–26 in the National Assembly. According to the announcement made by the Ministry of Finance, the formal presentation of the budget 2025–26 to both the federal cabinet and parliament is set to take place during the first week of June 2025.

In preparation for this major fiscal event, the Finance Division has been directed to complete all necessary budget documents, financial summaries, and schedules by the end of May 2025. These include key components such as expenditure plans, revenue targets, taxation policies, and sectoral allocations for the upcoming fiscal year.

Sources within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) revealed that the revenue authority is actively reviewing budget proposals received from a wide range of stakeholders, including chambers of commerce, trade associations, and industry representatives. In addition to external submissions, the FBR is also compiling internal budget recommendations from its field formations, including the Inland Revenue Service and Pakistan Customs.

However, starting with the budget 2025–26, a significant procedural change will be implemented. The responsibility for finalizing all budget proposals will now lie with the policy wing of the Finance Ministry rather than the FBR. This move is aimed at streamlining the decision-making process and ensuring that fiscal strategies align more closely with the government’s broader economic goals and policy framework.

The upcoming budget will be particularly important as the country seeks to address ongoing economic challenges, including inflation, fiscal deficits, and a push for greater documentation of the economy. Economists expect the government to focus on expanding the tax base, curbing unnecessary expenditures, and allocating more funds for social protection and development sectors.

With preparations now underway, all eyes are on the first week of June, when the government will unveil its financial roadmap for the next fiscal year.
