Government prioritizes ongoing projects amid economic pressures and fiscal constraints
The Sindh government has proposed development expenditures exceeding Rs720 billion in its Budget 2026-27, aiming to continue infrastructure development and improve public services despite mounting economic challenges.
Presenting the budget in the Sindh Assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah announced that the provincial government has allocated Rs720.385 billion for development initiatives across multiple sectors of the province.
The allocation reflects the government’s commitment to sustaining development activities while adopting a cautious fiscal strategy.
According to the budget estimates, the proposed Provincial Annual Development Plan (ADP) for 2026-27 stands at Rs385 billion.
In addition, Rs15 billion has been earmarked for district-level ADPs, while the Foreign Project Assistance (FPA) component is estimated at Rs256.055 billion.
The budget also includes Rs64.33 billion under the Federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
The chief minister highlighted that the new development portfolio represents a significant decline of nearly 30 percent compared to the previous year’s allocation of Rs1,018.326 billion.
He attributed the reduction to emerging geopolitical developments in the Gulf region, growing economic uncertainty, fiscal constraints, and the provincial government’s austerity measures.
Murad Ali Shah emphasized that no new development schemes would be introduced under the ADP 2026-27. Instead, the government will focus on completing ongoing projects and maximizing development outcomes through efficient utilization of resources.
He stated that the administration aims to safeguard essential public services while prioritizing flagship projects of strategic importance.
According to the chief minister, rising volatility in global energy markets, recurring fuel crises, and increased operational costs have placed additional pressure on public finances.
The Sindh government, he said, has adopted a prudent fiscal approach centered on high-impact interventions, inclusive growth, and improved service delivery.
Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that every rupee spent contributes to the welfare, prosperity, and sustainable development of the people of Sindh.
