    Customs I&I impounds smuggled fabric in Islamabad

    ISLAMABAD: The intelligence and investigation (I&I) agency of Pakistan Customs has impounded a huge quantity of smuggled fabric while conducting a raid in a market located in Islamabad.

    The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in a statement on Sunday said that the Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation, Rawalpindi while building further on the incessant drive against smuggling, this morning on a credible information of smuggled fabric dumped in godowns located in a market at Golra Road Islamabad, after obtaining search warrants under section 162 of the Customs Act, 1969, conducted raid with assistance from Islamabad Police (PS Shams Colony).

    Huge quantity of alleged smuggled fabric worth millions has been recovered and taken into custody. During the operation unidentified assailants attacked official vehicle of Assistant Director and damaged it. The directorate initiated legal proceedings.

    This seizure is in line with the stated policy of the present government to curb illegal goods and thereby promote local industry. Ms. Kanwal Ali Additional Director, Naveed Bugvi Deputy Director and Rao Fahad Iqbal Assistant Director led the crackdown.

    It is pertinent to mention that Federal Board of Revenue is following a policy of zero tolerance against smuggling and thereby has increased vigilance and surveillance of cargo movement across the border.

    MCC Gwadar seizes huge quantity of methamphetamine

    ISLAMABAD: Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) Gwadar has seized huge quantity of methamphetamine in an operation against smugglers at Ormara, a statement said on Saturday.

    In continuation with FBR’s policy of crackdown against the menace of narcotics/drugs, Collectorate of Customs, Gwadar again in an intelligence based operation on 17.02.2022 seized 7.5 kg of high quality methamphetamine/ ICE after chasing the smugglers in the mountainous area of Basol, Ormara.

    The value of seizure is approximately Rs.222 Million. FIR has been lodged and further investigation is underway.

    It is also pertinent to mention that Collectorate of Customs, Gwadar seized 255 kg of Opium 3 days ago. The value of seizure was 80 Million.

    Gwadar Customs seizes opium worth Rs80 million

    ISLAMABAD: The anti-smuggling team of Gwadar Customs Collectorate has confiscated a huge quantity of opium and a vehicle, which have worth of Rs80 million, a statement said on Tuesday.

    The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in the statement said that the Gwadar collectorate had made seizure in a successful operation on February 13, 2022.

    In pursuance of a credible information, the ASO team of Collectorate of Customs, Gwadar has effected seizure of narcotics (255 KGs Opium) at Ganz in the wake of a long chase.

    During patrolling, Customs Staff spotted a coure car around Jiwani which was signaled to stop for search. However, the driver of the vehicle accelerated and attempted to take away the vehicle which was followed and intercepted at Ganz.

    The driver of vehicle taking advantage of the darkness left the vehicle and fled away from the scene.

    However, the thorough search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 255 KGs of Opium. The recovered narcotics was later on shifted to Custom House, Gwadar.

    This Collectorate has lodged a FIR against the unknown persons and the proceedings have been initiated. The amount of the narcotics along with the seized vehicle in the international market comes to be Rs. 80 millions.

    The Chief Collector of Customs (Balochistan) Muhammad Sadiq & the Collector of Customs, Gwadar Ch.Muhammad Javaid have appreciated the feat of the Customs Staff and have congratulated them on seizure of narcotics.

    Peshawar Customs seizes narcotics worth Rs80 million

    ISLAMABAD: Collectorate of Appraisement, Peshawar Customs has seized narcotics worth Rs 80 million, said a press release issued on Saturday.

    The FBR said that continuing a relentless anti-smuggling drive, Pakistan Customs, Collectorate of Appraisememt Peshawar, Custom Station Torkham intercepted a Truck bearing Reg. No.RIJ-9175 coming from Afghanistan which resulted in recovery of foreign origin Charas 160-Kgs, Opium 15.50-Kgs and Cocaine 6.5 Kgs approximately valuing Rs 80 Million.

    The narcotics were kept in the secret cavities of the Truck especially made for the purpose.

    The vehicle along with recovered narcotics and arrested driver have been brought to Custom House, Peshawar. An FIR has been lodged against the arrested driver and further investigations are in progress.

    LEAs to get cash reward under Customs Rules

    ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will give cash rewards to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) for recovery and confiscation of smuggled or non-duty paid goods under Customs laws.

    The FBR issued SRO 1398(I)/2021 dated October 20, 2021, and proposed to include law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in Customs Reward Rules, 2021.

    According to the draft amendment, the FBR proposed to include in reward rules the “officers and officials of other law enforcement agencies who assist Customs officers and officials or are actually instrumental in the seizure of smuggled goods and vehicles as confirmed by the respective collectorate of customs, for their meritorious conduct in such cases only after realization of part or whole of the duty and taxes involved in such cases.”

    At present, the eligibility for reward stated that cash reward shall be sanctioned under the rules to the following categories of persons in cases involving evasion of duty and other taxes, and confiscation of goods, namely:

    (a) officers and officials of Pakistan Customs Service for their contribution in such cases; and

    (b) informer providing credible information leading to such confiscation or detection, as the case may be.

    As per SRO 1386(I)/2012 dated November 26, 2021, the determination of reward has been explained as the amount of reward, in cases involving evasion of duty and other taxes, and confiscation of goods shall be determined in the following manner:

    01. Where the amount of customs duty and other taxes realized is Rs500,000 or less, the amount of reward shall be 20 per cent of the customs duty and other taxes.

    02. Where the amount of customs duty and other taxes realized is more than Rs500,000 but not more than Rs1,000,000, the amount of reward shall be Rs100,000 plus 10 per cent of the customs duty and other taxes in excess of Rs500,000.

    03. Where the amount of customs duty and other taxes realized is over Rs1,000,000, the amount of reward shall be Rs150,000 plus 5 per cent of the customs duty and other taxes in excess of Rs1,000,000.

    Illicit cigarettes worth Rs549 million confiscated in seven months

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Customs has confiscated non-duty paid cigarettes worth Rs549 million during first seven months of the current fiscal year, a statement said on Sunday.

    A spokesman of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said that over 7.1 million sticks of illegal cigarettes had been confiscated during the period under review.

    The spokesman said that the FBR had issued instructions to field formation of Inland Revenue and Pakistan Customs to accelerate their efforts against smuggled and non-duty paid cigarettes.

    The FBR chairman issued instructions to both the field formations in this regard.

    In the anti-smuggling efforts to prevent movement of illegal cigarettes the Intelligence and Investigation of Inland Revenue had conducted 65 operations. In these operations, the IR authorities confiscated 44.827 million sticks of cigarettes worth Rs95.51 million. Out of these amount the authorities had recovered Rs2.2 million and remaining amount was in litigation before the court.

    The FBR chairman had directed the tax authorities to expand the anti-smuggling operation across the country.

    The customs authorities have been issued special instructions for enhancing vigilance at sea ports, air ports and dry ports to prevent smuggling of illicit cigarettes.

    The spokesman said that the customs authorities had recovered huge quantity of non-duty paid cigarettes on the basis of information.

    The spokesman further said that in order to avoid misuse auction process, the FBR had imposed complete ban on auction of confiscated cigarettes.

    Pakistan Customs makes seizures of Rs10.36bn in 2 ½ months

    KARACHI: Pakistan Customs has accelerated operation against smuggling and non-duty paid items and made seizure of goods and vehicles valuing Rs10.36 billion during two and a half months of the current fiscal year.

    The seizure during the current period of the current fiscal year is 91.4 percent higher than the seizure of Rs5.41 billion made in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

    This was disclosed by chief collector of customs enforcement-south at a press conference here on Friday.

    The chief collector south said that the customs seized goods worth Rs36.57 billion in fiscal year 2019/2020 as against the seizure of Rs25.39 billion in the preceding fiscal year, showing an increase of 44 percent.

    He said that the collectorate south contributed the anti-smuggling and action against non-duty paid items to the tune of Rs1.18 billion during the period of July 01 to September 15, 2020 as compared with Rs958 million in the same period of the last fiscal year, showing an increase of 23 percent.

    Whereas, the value of seizures of South in fiscal year 2019/2020 was amounted to Rs12.25 billion as against seizures of Rs2.74 billion in the preceding fiscal year, registering an increase of 347 percent.

    Smuggled vehicles involving value of Rs539 million were seized in the fiscal year 2019/2020 as against Rs358 million in the preceding fiscal year.

    The major seized items including vehicles, electronics, cigarettes, cloth, diesel, mobile phones, currency, betel nuts, gutka etc.

    The collector said that Pakistan Customs collected customs duty to the tune of Rs624.65 billion in 2019/2020, which was 99 percent of the assigned target by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for the fiscal year.

    Furthermore, the collection of customs duty was at Rs92 billion during July – August 2020 as against the assigned target of Rs87 billion.

    The collection of all taxes at import stage was amounted at Rs1,710 billion in fiscal year 2019/2020 which was 0.3 percent less than the preceding fiscal year.

    Total tax collection of all taxes during July 01 to September 15, 2020 was at Rs347 billion, which is 1.39 percent more than the tax collected in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

    During July – August 2020, the customs formation south collected customs duty amounting Rs76.38 billion against the target of Rs74 billion and against collection of Rs83.69 billion in 2019, the collector added.
