Thunderstorm Alert: Karachi Braces for July 24 Downpour

ISLAMABAD, July 23, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert, predicting thunderstorms for Karachi and other districts in Sindh on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

In its detailed forecast, the Met Office indicated that hot and very humid weather would persist across most of the province. However, Karachi, Umarkot, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Mithi, Sanghar, Thatta, and Badin may experience rain-windstorms or thunderstorms during the evening and night.

Beyond Sindh, the forecast extends to Punjab, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, northeast and south Balochistan, and southeast Sindh. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of northeast Punjab, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Met Office has cautioned that the anticipated heavy rains could trigger flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in regions such as Murree, Galiyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Malakand, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kurrum, Orakzai, Khyber, Mohmand, Nowshera, Swabi, Kashmir, Dera Ghazi Khan, Musa Khel, Barkhan, Kohlu, and Loralai. Additionally, urban flooding is a concern for low-lying areas in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through tonight and into July 24. Landslides may disrupt road access in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this wet spell.

The synoptic situation suggests that monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are penetrating the upper and central parts of the country. A trough of westerly wave is also affecting these regions, contributing to the adverse weather conditions.

As for the weather on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are expected to continue in Punjab, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, east and south Balochistan, and lower Sindh. Isolated heavy rainfall is also predicted for upper Punjab, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In the past 24 hours, hot and humid weather dominated most parts of the country, with rain-windstorms and thunderstorms occurring at isolated locations in Punjab, Islamabad, south Sindh, Kashmir, southeast Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
