Thunderstorms Expected in Many Parts of Pakistan on May 11

Islamabad, May 10, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert for Saturday, May 11, 2024, predicting thunderstorms across multiple regions of the country.

Residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions as volatile weather conditions are expected to prevail.

According to the PMD, a significant weather system, characterized by a westerly wave, is impacting the upper and central parts of Pakistan. This system is anticipated to bring rain-windstorm events and thunderstorms in regions including Kashmir, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Balochistan, and upper/central Punjab. There is also a possibility of isolated heavy rainfalls and hailstorms during this period.

The forecast for Friday, May 10, indicated mainly hot and dry weather conditions in most parts of the country, with the exception of rain-windstorm and thunderstorms in specific areas such as Kashmir, the Pothohar region, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, north Balochistan, south Punjab, and upper Sindh. Isolated heavyfalls and hailstorms were also reported.

Reflecting on the past 24 hours, the PMD reported prevailing hot and dry weather across the majority of the country, with extremely high temperatures noted in central and southern regions. However, certain areas experienced rain-windstorm and thunderstorms, including upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, Islamabad, Kashmir, and adjoining areas.

Recorded rainfall during the last 24 hours included 23 mm in Bannu, 8 mm in Malam Jabba, and smaller amounts in Saidu Sharif, Chitral, Dir, Drosh, Kalam, and Attock. The city of Kalat in Balochistan recorded 1 mm of rain.

Temperature reports from yesterday highlighted extraordinarily high temperatures across various cities, with Dadu, Jacobabad, and Mohenjo Daro hitting a scorching 48 degrees Celsius. Other cities such as Padidan, Khairpur, Larkana, Sukkur, Sibbi, and Rohri also recorded high temperatures of 47 degrees Celsius.
