Toy Story 5 Smashes 2026 Box Office Records With $312 Million Global Opening

Entertainment

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has opened to a massive $160 million at the North American box office, marking the biggest domestic debut of 2026 and setting multiple franchise records, according to studio estimates.

The film’s domestic opening surpassed Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which previously held the year’s top debut with $131.7 million in April.

Second-Largest Animated Opening in History

The latest installment in the long-running Pixar franchise now ranks as the second-largest animated opening weekend of all time, trailing only Incredibles 2, which launched with $182.7 million in 2018.

Globally, Toy Story 5 achieved a $312 million opening weekend, making it the strongest worldwide debut in the franchise’s history. The previous record was held by Toy Story 4, which opened to $238 million globally.

The new film has already surpassed its reported $250 million production budget within its opening frame.

Strong International Performance

Outside the United States and Canada, the strongest markets included Mexico with $26.6 million, the United Kingdom with $20 million, China with $18 million and France with $7.2 million.

The global response underscores continued international demand for Pixar’s flagship franchise, which has remained one of the studio’s most valuable properties for nearly three decades.

Story and Cast Return

In Toy Story 5, a new smart device named “Lilypad” enters Bonnie’s room, disrupting the balance between toys and technology and challenging Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the group.

The film sees the return of original voice cast members including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, alongside new additions such as Greta Lee, Keanu Reeves, Craig Robinson, Alan Cumming, Conan O’Brien and Bad Bunny.

The film is directed by Andrew Stanton, known for Finding Nemo and WALL-E, and co-directed by Kenna Harris. It has received an A CinemaScore from opening audiences.

Industry Outlook

If recent Pixar sequels are any indication, Toy Story 5 could continue its strong momentum. The franchise’s previous entry, Toy Story 4, grossed more than $1.07 billion worldwide.

Other recent Disney animated hits, including Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2, have crossed $1 billion and $1.8 billion respectively, suggesting strong long-term box office potential for the latest release.

Weekend Box Office Rankings

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day held second place with $17 million in its second weekend, bringing its global total to $160 million.

Horror-thriller Obsession took third place with $14.2 million and has now earned more than $330 million worldwide on a sub-$1 million budget.

A24’s Backrooms earned $7.3 million in fourth place, while Paramount’s Scary Movie rounded out the top five with $6.7 million.

The strong performance across multiple titles highlights a competitive summer box office season, with both animated and original films drawing significant audiences.
