Euphoria Season 3 has sparked controversy after introducing a bold new storyline involving Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, entering the world of adult content creation.
While the storyline generated attention among viewers, several adult content creators and performers have criticized the portrayal, arguing it reinforces harmful stereotypes about the industry.
Adult creators call storyline unrealistic
Sydney Leathers criticized the show’s depiction of adult content platforms in comments shared with Variety.
“There’s just a lot that’s ridiculous and cartoonish about it,” she said.
Leathers pointed to scenes she claimed would violate platform rules, including content involving age-play themes.
“There’s so much that they have her doing that is not even allowed on OnlyFans,” she added, noting that payment processors and content policies have become increasingly strict.
Maitland Ward criticizes portrayal
Adult performer Maitland Ward also expressed concern over the storyline.
According to Ward, scenes involving Cassie wearing baby-themed costumes while creating adult content were “beyond troubling.”
She argued that such portrayals reinforce negative stereotypes suggesting sex workers lack morals or will “do anything for money.”
Ward further criticized what she described as the entertainment industry’s tendency to connect sex work with abuse and trafficking narratives.
Sam Levinson responds to backlash
Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria, defended the creative direction behind Cassie’s storyline.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Levinson said the scenes were intentionally designed with absurd and comedic elements to prevent viewers from becoming fully immersed in the character’s fantasy.
“What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity,” he explained.
Levinson also pointed to the humorous tone created by scenes involving Cassie’s housekeeper filming the content.
