Tax System Digitization Underway as Part of Reforms: PM Kakar

Islamabad, September 7, 2023 – Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar has announced that Pakistan’s tax system is undergoing a digital transformation as part of the government’s tax reform efforts.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Prime Minister Kakar emphasized the importance of enhancing tax collection to improve the country’s economy.

Prime Minister Kakar assured the delegation that addressing the concerns and issues faced by the business community is among the top priorities of the government. He also requested that a report be submitted promptly regarding the expansion of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) point of sales (PoS).

Despite the current economic challenges, Prime Minister Kakar acknowledged the vital role played by the business community in driving the country’s economic growth and providing employment opportunities. He highlighted that a nationwide operation has been initiated, particularly in border areas, to combat smuggling, which has yielded positive results.

Regarding trade promotion with neighboring countries, Prime Minister Kakar mentioned that ongoing consultations are aimed at bolstering trade relations.

To restore confidence among traders, industrialists, and investors, Prime Minister Kakar stressed the importance of further stabilizing the country’s economy. He emphasized the need for rapid reforms in the electricity sector and action against electricity theft.

In terms of improving the business environment, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Commerce to maintain regular communication and consultations with chambers of commerce across the country. He also called for enhanced performance from commercial attachés in Pakistani embassies.

During the meeting, members of the business community shared their concerns and offered suggestions for resolving their issues. Prime Minister Kakar welcomed their input and assured them that their problems would be addressed.

Additionally, Prime Minister Kakar urged the improvement of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) system and the digitization of citizen services and land records, with a focus on involving the business community in the consultation process.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Industry, Chairman of the FBR, Chairman of the CDA, and related government representatives.
