KARACHI: The number of active taxpayers has surpassed 1.8 million for tax year 2017, according to latest weekly Active Taxpayers List (ATL) released by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
FBR sources said that the number of active taxpayers has reached to 1.801 million for Tax Year 2017. This ATL 2017 will remain applicable till February 28, 2019.
The appearance on the ATL of return filer is mandatory for availing reduced rate of withholding tax rates.
The sources said that the FBR had set a target of 1.8 million active taxpayers for the tax year 2017, which was achieved.
For the tax year 2017 the entire machinery of FBR was engaged to pursue all existing and potential taxpayers to file their income tax returns.
The sources said that taxpayers who failed to file their returns by due date for tax year 2017 were still filing their returns and getting their names on the ATL.
However, this practice is not allowed for tax year 2018. The government through Finance Act, 2018 amended Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 and introduced Section 182A under which the late filers would not be treated as filer or active taxpayer.
The FBR received 1.55 million returns for tax year 2018 and it would be the final number for the ATL 2018 to be released on March 01, 2019.
However, sources in the FBR said that the government had realized the existing situation and considering to allow late filers to file their returns and get their names on ATL.
