FBR Extends Sales Tax Return Filing Deadline to April 22, 2024

Islamabad, April 15, 2024 – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension of the deadline for filing monthly sales tax returns, providing relief to taxpayers across the country.

The decision comes in response to requests from tax bars and concerns raised regarding the timing of the original deadline.

In a statement issued on Monday, the FBR communicated its decision to extend the deadline for filing monthly sales tax returns up to April 22, 2024. This extension aims to accommodate taxpayers who faced challenges in meeting the initial deadline due to various reasons, including the recent Eid holidays.

The announcement was made following consultations with key stakeholders, including Chief Commissioners of Inland Revenue, Large Taxpayers Offices (LTOs), Medium Taxpayers Office (MTO), Corporate Tax Offices (CTOs), and Regional Tax Offices (RTOs).

According to the communication sent by the FBR, the extension applies to the submission of Sales Tax and Federal Excise Return for the tax period of March 2024. The original due date for this submission was April 18, 2024, but it has now been extended to April 22, 2024.

Tax bars across the country had advocated for an extension of the filing deadline, citing concerns about the limited timeframe available for compliance. They highlighted the challenges faced by taxpayers, particularly in light of the recent Eid holidays, which may have disrupted normal business operations and tax compliance activities.

The extension of the deadline reflects the FBR’s commitment to facilitating taxpayers and ensuring a smooth and efficient tax filing process. By providing additional time for submission, the FBR aims to alleviate the pressure on taxpayers and enable them to fulfill their tax obligations in a timely manner.

The decision to extend the deadline has been welcomed by the business community and tax professionals, who view it as a positive step towards promoting compliance and easing the burden on taxpayers. It is expected to enhance taxpayer confidence and contribute to a more conducive environment for business and economic activities in the country.

As the new deadline approaches, taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the additional time granted by the FBR to ensure accurate and timely filing of their sales tax returns. Compliance with tax regulations remains essential for the smooth functioning of the tax system and the overall economic development of Pakistan.

The extension of the sales tax return filing deadline to April 22, 2024, demonstrates the FBR’s responsiveness to taxpayer needs and its commitment to facilitating tax compliance. This decision underscores the importance of dialogue and cooperation between tax authorities and stakeholders in ensuring an effective and equitable tax system.
