Kia Recalls Telluride SUVs Due to Fire Hazard in Seats

PkRevenue.com – Kia is embarking on a significant recall initiative, targeting 462,869 units of its popular Telluride SUVs across model years 2020 through 2024.

The motivation behind this massive recall is a rather alarming issue related to the electric seat motors installed in both the driver and passenger front seats.

This concern extends to both operational and parked states of the vehicle, prompting Kia to advise owners to park their Tellurides outdoors until the matter is rectified.

The crux of the problem lies not with the seat motors themselves, but rather with the slide knob that governs their operation. As per the recall notice (NHTSA Recall Number 24V-407), an external impact has the potential to dislodge the seat switch back cover, leading to a misalignment of the switch and continuous power flow to the motor. Left unattended, this could result in overheating and, in the worst-case scenario, ignition.

In terms of reported incidents, Kia has acknowledged a lone occurrence involving a minor fire in the driver’s seat of a 2023 Telluride during operation. Additionally, there have been six confirmed instances of melted components beneath the seats, accompanied by reports of smoke within the cabin in certain cases.

While one might assume that a malfunctioning power seat motor would be immediately noticeable, the recall notice does not elaborate on this aspect. However, Kia urges owners to remain vigilant for telltale signs such as seats continuing to move after the slide knob has been released, as well as unusual odors of burning, smoke, or unresponsive seat controls.

Fortunately, the resolution strategy is relatively straightforward: Kia dealers will undertake the installation of a new bracket for the power seat switch back cover and the replacement of seat control knobs.

Owners can anticipate receiving notification of the recall via mail commencing on July 30th. It’s a proactive step by Kia to prioritize the safety and well-being of its customers, ensuring peace of mind on the road.
