Oppo is on a mission to revolutionize personal AI technology through its devices. The company has announced an ambitious plan to integrate artificial intelligence into all its smartphone lines, aiming to reach 50 million AI users globally by the end of 2024.
Oppo is not only developing AI technologies internally but also collaborating with industry giants like Google, Microsoft, and MediaTek to deliver a diverse range of AI-driven experiences. The company has already filed over 5,000 patents related to AI, with approximately 70% focusing on AI imaging.
In a groundbreaking move, Oppo became the first company to deploy a large language model (LLM) with 7 billion parameters on a smartphone, introducing the AndesGPT model on the Find X7 series in January. This model enhances natural language comprehension and can summarize phone calls. To date, Oppo has rolled out over 100 generative AI features across its devices this year.
Generative AI is at the forefront of Oppo’s strategy, aiming to attract 50 million users specifically for its generative AI features. These features include advanced photo editing capabilities, such as object removal and automatic background filling, which users reportedly engage with an average of 15 times daily. Additionally, generative AI assists in creating engaging visual content for social media.
LLMs will also be used for rapid transcription of spoken words and real-time translation. Oppo envisions seamless cross-device functionality, enabling desktop and phone AI features to work in unison.
A hybrid AI architecture is in development, combining on-device AI with cloud-based solutions. The upcoming Reno12 series and the next Find X flagship, set for a global release soon, will incorporate Google’s Gemini model and include an AI Toolbox featuring AI Writer and AI Recording Summary functions.
The partnership with Microsoft aims to enhance connectivity between desktop and phone AI, providing swift and accurate responses through both natural voice and text interfaces. Meanwhile, the collaboration with MediaTek focuses on hardware optimization, improving storage and computational efficiency in future Oppo phones.
