Pakistan Discovers Significant Oil and Gas Reserves in Sindh Province

Karachi, December 8, 2023 – In a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s energy sector, the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced the discovery of substantial oil and gas reserves in the Sindh province.

This development comes as a welcome relief for citizens grappling with a massive shortfall of natural resources.

The revelation was made in a communication sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) by OGDCL. According to the company’s statement, the gas condensate was discovered at Dars West Well No. 2 in the Tando Allah Yar district of Sindh. The exploration was part of the joint venture of Dars West Development and Production Lease (D&PL), with OGDCL as the operator holding 77.5 percent share and GHPL with a 22.5 percent stake.

The successful discovery of gas and condensate was made in the “C” Sands of the Lower Guru Formation over Development Well Dars West No. 02. This well, strategically located in District Tando Allah Yar, has proven to be a valuable asset for the country’s energy sector.

The drilling and testing of the Dars West Well No. 2 were conducted with OGDCL’s in-house expertise. The well, reaching a depth of 2081 meters, tested an impressive 8.51 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and 360 barrels per day (BPD) of condensate. These results were achieved through a choke size of 32/64” at the wellhead, with a flowing pressure of 1947 pounds per square inch (PSI) from the lower guru C-Sand, which is an exploratory zone.

The success of Dars West Well No. 2 is attributed to the company’s aggressive exploration strategy. This significant discovery not only adds to the hydrocarbon reserves of OGDCL and its joint venture partners but also contributes to the overall energy security of the country.

The newfound reserves hold the potential to significantly reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported energy resources, consequently strengthening the nation’s energy security and fostering economic growth. It is anticipated that this discovery will not only benefit the local economy but also enhance Pakistan’s standing in the global energy market.

This achievement underscores the importance of continued investment in exploration and development activities in the country. The government, in collaboration with industry players, must prioritize sustainable practices to harness and utilize these resources efficiently, ensuring long-term benefits for the nation.

The OGDCL’s success in Sindh province marks a milestone in Pakistan’s quest for energy self-sufficiency and positions the country as a key player in the regional energy landscape. As the nation celebrates this breakthrough, attention is now turning to the responsible and sustainable extraction of these resources for the benefit of current and future generations.
