President Alvi approves sentence remission for prisoners on Eid ul Fitr

ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, has granted remission in sentences for certain categories of prisoners on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr.

The remission of 90 days has been approved in accordance with Article 45 of the Constitution, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.

Male prisoners above 65 years of age who have completed one-third of their sentence, as well as female prisoners above 60 years of age who have also completed one-third of their sentence, will be eligible for the relief.

In addition, prisoners under the age of 18 who have completed one-third of their sentence will also be eligible for remission. However, the remission will not apply to those convicted of certain serious crimes, such as capital punishment, espionage, rape, anti-state activities, kidnapping, terrorism, incurring loss to national exchequer, financial crimes, and robbery.

This decision by the President is aimed at providing relief to certain categories of prisoners on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr.
