Corning has introduced its latest innovation, Gorilla Glass 7i. This new glass variant is specifically designed for value and intermediate devices, promising enhanced durability and scratch resistance compared to previous models.
Four years after the introduction of Gorilla Glass Victus, which targeted premium devices but began appearing in some mid-range models, Corning recognized the need for a more cost-effective solution. Gorilla Glass 7i addresses this gap, bringing the latest in glass technology to a broader audience.
Gorilla Glass 7i is part of the seventh generation of Corning’s glass lineup, a continuation of the innovations seen with Victus. The “i” in 7i stands for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices,” highlighting its role in bridging the gap between older glass models and the top-tier Victus.
This new glass can survive drops from up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) onto rough surfaces such as asphalt, doubling the drop resistance of comparable alternatives. Additionally, Gorilla Glass 7i boasts twice the scratch resistance of competing products, making it a robust choice for mid-range smartphones.
Corning’s focus on sustainability is evident in the design of Gorilla Glass 7i, which aims to support the mass market’s growing demand for high-quality displays. This is particularly relevant as more mid-range phones feature advanced displays, including 10-bit and 12-bit OLED screens, which are significantly larger than those from just a few years ago.
The necessity for Gorilla Glass 7i stems from the continued use of older glass technologies in current devices. Popular models like the Nothing Phone (2a) and Poco F6 Pro still rely on Gorilla Glass 5, which was launched in 2016.
Even newer devices like the Pixel 8a use Gorilla Glass 3, dating back to 2013. As the market evolves, there is a clear need for more modern, durable glass that fits within modest budgets without compromising on quality.
Oppo will be the first manufacturer to incorporate Gorilla Glass 7i into its upcoming smartphone releases.
